Regional Profile
The southwest region of England forms a long peninsular of land which stretches over 217 miles (351 sq. km.) from the western tip of Cornwall to the eastern border of Wiltshire and covers an area of 9,204 sq. miles (23,837 sq km) and makes up almost 20% of England. The distance from the eastern border of the region to the western tip of Cornwall is only slightly less than the distance from the eastern border of the region to Scotland.

It contains the six counties of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, and the 10 unitary authorities of Scilly Isles (Cornwall), Plymouth (Devon), Torbay (Devon), Poole (Dorset), Bournemouth (Dorset), Swindon, North Somerset, Bristol & N.E Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Bristol. The population of the area is around 5,000,000 people. There has been a large influx of people moving into the region over the last twenty five years and this has caused house prices in the region to become higher than the national average.

The main cities and towns are Bristol, Bournemouth, Poole, Plymouth, Swindon, Gloucester, Torbay, Cheltenham, and Exeter.
The geography and geology of the region is extremely varied and contains many important National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB's). Just 10% of the land is urban with most of the region (80%) being agricultural land. There is some arable farming but mainly it is dairy farming on the lowlands with beef and sheep on the higher areas. The Southwest contains the Natural World Heritage Site of the Jurassic Coast and the natural lagoon of Chesil Beach. It also boasts four UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Stonehenge and Avebury, the City of Bath; the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape.
The region's main economic factors are property, manufacturing, retail and tourism. In the south west of the region tourism accounts for around 20% of England's total domestic tourist visits and 8% of overseas visits. The sector contributes over £4,000,000 annually to the region's economy.
